Now that the superficial is out of the way, while I'm sure most of my blog lovelies place some importance on following what's going on around the world, some might find these links to recent news useful:
- Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has stepped down: The basics of the story | Why this is important
- Representative Jackie Speier, one of my personal heroes (especially because of her speech at NCYLS 2010), spoke out against the Pence amendment which is aiming to remove funding for Planned Parenthood. Sadly, the House of Reps has voted in favor of the Pence amendment. However, there is a chance of it being struck down if the Senate votes it. (extra: why it's important to defend PP / Urge Congress to protect women's reproductive rights - sign the petition to stand with PP)
- A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has struck Christchurch, New Zealand. People have died and the damage is extensive.
- Major violence is going on in Libya and Bahrain right now. Words cannot express how dangerous it is over there and my heart goes out to everybody over to the civilians who are fighting for their freedom, and for the ones who have been hurt or have lost their lives because of this struggle. (extra: what we can do to help)
So... it's pretty obvious that there's no small number of atrocities going on this world. But something that we can all do to help is be aware of what's going on, and send our support as a sign of solidarity to the groups that need it.
